ORAL BIOFILM CONTROL AND CORROSION STABILITY OF MINI IMPLANT ALLOYS IN THE ORAL ENVIRONMENT

Introduction: Chlohexidine digluconate is considered a gold standard for a control of dental and oral biofilm. Recently, probiotic bacteria is recommended for the modulation of pathogens in oral biofilm. The aim of this study was to explore the resistance to general and pitting corrosion of stainless steel and titanium made orthodontic mini implants in simulated oral environment. Materials and Methods: Stainless steel type 316 orthodontic mini implants and mini implants made from titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V grade 5 were tested. Studies were conducted in artificial saliva and in the presence of two oral hygiene products (one containing chlorhexidine digluconate with fluorides and other probiotic bacteria) that are usually recommended to orthodontic patients. Corrosion tests were carried out by cyclic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Results: Mini implants made from stainless steel have lower resistance to corrosion than the titanium implants. General corrosion was increased in both steel and titanium implants when antiseptic, containing fluoride ions, was used, while tendency towards pitting corrosion was not much altered. Probiotic on the other hand had beneficial influence on general corrosion resistance but increased tendency towards pitting corrosion for both implant materials. Conclusion: Products used for a control of oral and dental biofilm influence the corrosion stability of orthodontic mini implants and in some cases may lead to increased metal dissolution. Mini implants made from titanium alloy have greater resistance towards both, general and localized corrosion.
