Evaluation of Unsignalized Two-Way Stop Controlled Intersections Capacity and Measures of Effectiveness

The leveled unsignalized intersections are most common type of crossroads in urban traffic network. Most countries have develpoed they one capacity methodology for the analysis of the intersection capacity and measures of their effectiveness. In this article are evaluated three capacity analysis methodologies (Highway Capacity Manual 2000, SIDRA and Richtlinen fuerdie Anla-gen von Strassen -RAS) for leveled unsignalized two - way STOP controlled intersections. As evaluation intersection performance measures are chosen the capacity and two measures of effectiveness: degree of saturation and average delay. The research purpose is to evaluate the capacity and the basic leveled unsignalized intersections measures of effectiveness according to the three different capacity methodologies, to determine and to analyze the result differences between the methodologies for two - way STOP controlled intersections with high and low entry volumes. First there are presented the theoretical methodologies differennces and in continuance the field research results are showed. Using adequate software for mentioned methodologies: HiCAP 1.0.0, aaSIDRA 2.0 and our own program for RAS, the analyses of field research results on two selected intersections with high (to 1000 veh/ h/ intersection) and low (to 250 veh/ h/ intersection) entry volumes are made. The average differences between methodologies are analyzed and compared for both intersections. The analyses are showed that the different methodologies generally give similar results for all performance measures, but the methodology differences are dependable from the entry flow volumes.
