Sažetak
Several authors have reported the preoperative and postoperative vestibular functions in cochlear implant patients. The safe examination of the operated ear and comparison of the preoperative and postoperative average slow phase velocities of the caloric nystagmus is possible using the caloric computer system. The goal of this research was to investigate the role of vestibular function in speech development in children with cochlear implant. We have used a computer-based ENG system with caloric water stimulation. The vestibular system of 20 children with cochlear implant was examined before and one year after the cochlear implantation. The slow phase velocity and quick nystagmic component were measured. The results of vestibular function testing were compared with hearing and speech status. In all patients the peripheral vestibular function was unchanged after the implantation. The patients with normal vestibular function have shown better hearing and speech results. The positive correlation between the quick nystagmic component R and hearing and speech status have been found. The values demonstrated the significant role of vestibular function in hearing and speech development in children with cochlear implant.
