Bilateral cochlear implantation in Croatia
Intorduction: The Croatian cochlear Implant Programme began in 1996. in Department of Otorhinolaryngology Sestre milordnice University Hospital in Zagreb.Until June 2002. we have 106 patients with cochlear implants, one with auditory brainstem implant and one with bilateral cochlear implants.Bilateral cochlear implantation (BiCI) offers the potential to improve patient performance. The field of BiCI presents a hos of additional complexities and opportunities for both researchers and patients.Research on the improvement of speech understanding of implanted patients has concentrated primarily on unilateral cochlear implantations.Case description: The 20-year-old patient had been deaf for 10 years due to posttraumatic meningitis. With best fitted hearing aids on both sides during 10 years after meningitis, he was able to perceive acoustic sounds on 85&#8211 ; ; 125 dB between 125 and 1000 Hz.In 2000. he received both COMBI 40+ cochlear implants in a single operation.Results:6 months after fitting, the patient reached PTA on left ear between 25 and 90 dB, on right ear between 20 and 50 dB.With BiCI numbers, colours, words close set, word open set, sentences close set and sentences open set were between 90% and 100%.Signal to noise ratio exam &#8211 ; ; 10 dB SPL showed 80% score in sentences open set, and 100% sentences closed set with BiCI.Conclusion:BiCI in croatian patient showed significant improvement of speech understanding in quite and noise, and the patient benefited with BiCI better than with unilateral CI.
