Motifs of Atlas and Hercules on Baroque portals in the Habsburg Monarchy

Motifs of Atlas and Hercules on the facades of palaces and on the portals of newly-built fortress cities as part of imperial propaganda, left a strong impression of grandeur in urban spaces, but also carried an important political message. We view the phenomenon in the context of the rise of the Habsburg Monarchy as a leading European political and military power in the early 18th century, and address the origin and variants of the motif, its significance, as well as its current presence in urban memory.
