Designing products for additive manufacturing
Additive manufacturing is nowadays used not only for rapid prototyping but also as an everyday technology for manufacturing final products delivered to the customers. The additive manufacturing, through characteristic of adding material precisely where it is needed, brought new design possibilities and freedom of shaping our products. As the nature of technology is different when compared to conventional manufacturing, designers are facing the problem of how to design products for additive manufacturing. This paper examines issues of how to help designers understand the unique possibilities of additive manufacturing and apply them in their designs. The study is built around the problem of storing design knowledge about additive manufacturing in the form of design principles repository. The design principles offer design guidance at a higher level of abstraction that can be used to solve the individual design problem. Furthermore, we investigate the use of a physical representation of design principles to enable easier understanding and application of principles in the design.
