Findings of Late Antique Oil-lamps between Krka and Cetina Rivers
The area between Croatian rivers Krka and Cetina is abundant in archaeological sites. For almost two centuries archaeologists have been compiling, studying and publishing diverse and rich archaeological material found in this area. It includes various Late Antique oil-lamps. We have tried to gather papers documenting these lamps and to analyse available data. The aim was to make a map that represents their distribution on archaeological sites. In addition, we analysed the frequency of different types and the variety of images rendered in reliefs on discus. Undoubtedly we have missed some publications and we are aware that there is a significant number of unpublished material. However, available data have shown that most Late Antique oil-lamps originate from Salona, the capital of the Roman Province Dalmatia, or from its vicinity. A significant number has various images and about 11% have no decoration on discus. The standard motifs are Early Christian symbols, animal representations, various figures, vegetable motifs and geometric shapes that are common in Late Antique period.
