Analysis of the learning process dynamics of handstand forward roll segments

When assessing the acquisition of some structurally more complex skills based on errors in key segments of the performance of that skill, an assessment of the acquisition of the entire skill is given. Although such skill consists of a number of key points, the assumption is that not all are equally demanding to perform ; they do not have the same quality of performance ; and that each of them has its own dynamics of progress in the motor learning process. The learning process dynamics of handstand forward roll segments was analysed on a sample of 33 students of the Faculty of Kinesiology in Split, in eight weeks’ time. The newly constructed test for assessing the adoption of segments of this skill was found to have satisfactory metric characteristics, despite some initial heterogeneous results. By applying the Bonferroni post-hoc tests, we established that the largest number of segments from the transitive and the final checkpoints differed significantly from the values of the initial checkpoint segments ; a significant difference between the transitive and the final checkpoints was found only for the handstand hold segment (HH). From the initial to the final checkpoint, students improved the least the performance of the forward roll (FR ; the increase in average value was 0.86) but improved the most the performance of the segments of handstand hold (HH ; increase of 1.20). This study confirmed the existence of different learning modalities of different segments of this skill, as well as differences in the quality of performance of some segments in some checkpoints.
