Quality of leisure time as a protective factor for the development of behavioral problems: project overview
Leisure can be a powerful context for positive adolescent development, but it can also be a context for adolescent engagement in risky behaviors that can lead to substance use, risky sexual behaviors, and engagement in delinquent behaviors. The Laboratory for Prevention Research, Department of Behavioral Disorders, Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia leads the project “Quality of leisure time as a protective factor for the development of behavioral problems”, which aims to investigate the impact of structured leisure time on mitigating participation of young people in risky behaviors. The duration of the project is from June 2020 to June 2021. Within the aims of the project, the plan is to conduct quantitative online research. Data collection is underway. The sample has consisted of a total population of high school students from one county in Croatia (aged 14 to 19 ; approximately 4.000 students). The following instruments were applied to collect data: (1) Demographic Data ; (2) Adolescent Leisure Time Questionnaire ; (3) Free Time Motivation Scale for Adolescents ; (4) Youth Experience Survey ; (5) Context of participation in structured leisure activities ; (6) Communities that Care Youth Survey ; (7) Risky sexual behaviour of the adolescents. The result of this study can be an important resource for evidence-based intervention planning with the goal to promote youth positive development/prevention of youth risk behaviours. The broader perspective and understanding of the youth leisure context and how it influences their behavior and/or developmental outcomes is important for planning strategies and interventions in the field of prevention science. Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education, National Agency for Education, and Ethical Committee at the Faculty for Education and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia. The authors declare that this study received funding from the University of Zagreb, Croatia. The funder was not involved in the study design or decision to submit this abstract.
