The strongest bora event on the mid-Adriatic

The main spatial and temporal characteristics of three-dimensional atmospheric conditions in the most intense bora case on the mid-Adriatic, on 14-17 March 1962, were considered. It is shown that during severe mid-Adriatic bora one or two upper-level inversions are reflected in the upstream region. These inversions separate the higher and lower atmospheric airflow and make the lower fluid according to the hydraulic law. The application of the hydraulic theory to small variations of surface bora intensity successfully estimated the maximum bora velocity and the downstream bora layer height. However analyses have shown that the two-dimensional hydraulic theory could not completely explain mid-Adriatic bora occurrence. This required a study of a three-dimensional bora structure which was carried out by analyzing aerological data from Zagreb and Belgrade (upstream) and Split (downstream bora region). The analysis emphasizes the spatial and temporal variations of the wind field and stability during bora occurrence not only along the NE bora flow, but also perpendicular to this flow in the upstream area.
