Are work cultures singles-friendly and promoters of work-life balance? A study across six European countries

About the project: Recent research has shown that single individuals may be subject to stereotyping and be perceived more negatively than married individuals. In light of the increasing number of unmarried persons and those without children, our research attempts to further identify the personal and contextual characteristics that may contribute to the experience of conflicting or enriching life roles and the consequences for psychological well-being among single individuals. The research aims to 1) examine the perceptions of a singles-friendly work culture and work-life balance among single persons across different countries (Croatia, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Slovakia, Denmark) and different categories of single persons according to the (in)voluntariness of singlehood and work role salience, while considering the COVID-19 pandemic, and to 2) examine whether the relationships of the perception of a single- friendly work culture with recovery (from work) experiences, work-life balance, well-being, and job related outcomes are significant, and whether they vary among the different categories of single people according to their (in)voluntariness of singlehood and work role salience. Practical implications of our research include heightening the awareness of nations and organisations to consider such issues in forming policies and of supervisors and colleagues in providing informal support.
