Legal aspects of remote piloting
A maritime pilot (a marine pilot, a harbor pilot, a port pilot, or simply a pilot), is a mariner who maneuvers ships through dangerous or congested waters such as harbors, ports access and areas complex for navigation. New technologies allow the pilot to operate remotely, i.e., to give advice to the master from the mainland, while the movement of the ship is monitored in livestream by cameras from the bridge and in other ways. Such a model has several advantages however a legal model that enables it has still not yet been developed. Although automation and some other technological innovations can contribute to facilitating difficult tasks and streamlining the work process, the lack of regulation or standardization remains one of the obstacles to digitization throughout the maritime sector where standardization is crucial in order to improve dataflow and achieve interoperability.
