Strength assessment of a single-bottom tanker in towing condition on Ploče (Croatia) - Izmir (Turkey) route

Strength assessment of an aged single-bottom tanker in waves has been performed for its voyage (in towing condition) from Ploče (Croatia) to Izmir (Turkey). The problem is solved by a general hydro-structure tool that combines 3D FE structural model and 3D BE model based on Rankine panel theory. The analysis includes: adaptations of the existing 3D FE model according to the thickness measurement results of the complete ship hull as well as the adaptations of structural weight and ballast distribution (hydrostatic balancing), generating 3D hydrodynamic model, calculation of still-water structural response, determination of wave loading, spectral analysis for determination of long term values of loading parameters, definition of Equivalent Design Wave for time domain simulations to account for the effect of nonlinearities, and finally, calculation of ship structural response in waves. Beside hydrodynamic model of ship hull wetted surface, hydrodynamic models of each ballast tank were generated, and the effect of liquid is taken in a more consistent way, compared to usual modelling procedures that regularly consider it as a dry cargo in case of relatively small tanks. Calculation setup, i.e. ship speed, heading angles, sea conditions (scatter diagram, return period, etc.) were selected according to the relevant Classification Society requirements. Results of ship structural response in waves are compared with the relevant strength criteria, and proper conclusions on ship strength margin are drawn.
