«Iz Dalmacije» Ide von Düringsfeld: u potrazi za granicama imaginativne geografije u kontekstu ženskog putopisa o Mediteranu
In the 19th century, many German women writers traveled to those Mediterranean countries which, according to the concept of imaginative geography, fell under a unique cultural construct known as the Orient. Although, according to a popular belief at that time, the Orient began just behind Vienna, Dalmatia, as a Habsburg province, was seen as a semi-oriental country. The German writer Ida von Düringsfeld (1815-1876) chose Dalmatia as her destination and described her impressions in the travel writing «Aus Dalmatien» («From Dalmatia») in 1857. She divides the area of Dalmatia into the coastal part with its islands and the hinterland hidden by hills and mountains, so she establishes this natural division by creating a cultural border between the two parts. In the first part, which the author identifies as a space of civilization, the influence of Venice prevails, while the second, uncivilized and semi-barbaric part, is dominated by the influence of the Ottoman Empire. In the coastal part of Dalmatia, despite the dominant features, she still notices the conflict of Eastern and Western, or oriental/ Balkan/ Eastern European and European elements, while in the hinterland she notices only the backwardness that she perceives and identifies as orientality. The analysis of Ida von Düringsfeld's text highlights the most important places that reflect the intertwining and conflict of civilized/ European and barbaric/ oriental elements within the so- called civilized part of Dalmatia. The analysis of the travel writing showed the extent to which Dalmatia as a cultural construct is shown as a miniature version of the Mediterranean. In the search for the boundaries of imaginative geography, the author has obviously found an authentic space that separates, but also unites cultural influences and values.
