The role of education in recognizing and preventing the burnout syndrome in nursing students

Introduction: Nursing professionals face a myriad of stressors in their workplaces on a quotidian basis, and prolonged exposure to them can result in the burnout syndrome. The latter is a major problem that affects both the individual and his/her work environment. Moreover, the burnout syndrome impairs the quality of nursing care and, in turn, reduces patient safety. Methods: This quantitative study utilized the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory as a survey instrument. Convenient sampling technique was employed, which resulted in a total sample of 89 nursing students that are concomitantly employed as nurses in the health care institutions. The survey was conducted online during March 2020, and the obtained data has been analysed with the use of SPSS Statistics 25 software. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05 (two-tailed). Results: The average level of alienation among participants with an average of 7 years of work experience was 2.11, whilst the average level of exhaustion was 2.43. The results reveal that there is a statistically significant difference among nurses/technicians in the experience of alienation and exhaustion with respect to their job satisfaction (p<0.001 ; p=0.001). More specifically, nurses who are more satisfied with their job also have a lesser sense of alienation and exhaustion. Discussion: Formal education of nurses should incorporate the study of risk factors that can contribute to the development of the burnout syndrome, but also information on how to recognize the symptoms and increase preventative behaviour (such as the development of emotional intelligence). Likewise, it is pivotal to address personal traits and characteristics of the work environment that can adversely affect job satisfaction.
