Shark capture by commercial fisheries in Albania
Although Durres fishing port is the largest in Albania and it is situated in the southern Adriatic Sea, most of the sharks were recorded in southern areas that belong to the Ionian Sea, including A. superciliosus and bigeyed sixgill shark Hexanchus nakamurai Teng, 1962. Both sharks are not listed as Adriatic species (Lipej et al., 2004) and this research proves their northern distribution border extends for the Ionian sea. This fact can be used as support to a common opinion that Albania shares the Adriatic and the Ionian sea. However, certain studies reported that the border between the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea to be further south (Figure 1) which results in a situation that whole Albanian waters should be considered as a part of the Adriatic only and not the Ionian Sea (International Hydrographic Organization, 1953). Consequently, future lists of the Adriatic sharks should evaluate the status of A. superciliosus and H. nakamurai. Also, during this research, no species belonging to the Rhinobatidae or Squatinidae family were caught which proves that previous reports of high landings of these families were the case of misidentification.
