Croatian CPR Network

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Croatia, with a population of 4.5 million. There are 10, 500 doctors and 26, 000 nurses working in 64 acute health care facilities in 21 counties—14 clinical hospitals, 23 general hospitals, 4 EMS centres and 23 community health care centres. Emergency medicine does not exist as a distinct specialty and lack of comprehensive CPR education for health care professionals is reflected by inadequate emergency (cardiovascular) care. A National CPR network development started in April 2002, based on the following: (a) needs assessment - estimated initial number of CPR (health care) providers in 21 counties ; (b) adoption of the training programmes of the European Resuscitation Council ; (c) organisational and financial support between the Croatian Resuscitation Council and Croatian Ministry of Health. In the year 2002 there were two ALS Provider courses and one ALS Instructor course organised. Three ALS Provider courses, one ALS Instructor course and one BLS-AED course were held in the year 2003. During the period of 18 months (April 2002– December 2003) 143 ALS and 23 BLS-AED providers were generated, out of which 77 instructors were selected—4 full ERC instructors, 35 ALS instructor candidates, 25 BLS-AED instructor candidates and 13 ALS instructor potentials. In October 2003 a contract was signed between the ERC and the Croatian Ministry of health for further 16 ERC courses during the year 2004 (5 ALS-P, 2 ALS-I, 6 BLS-AED, 2 EPLS- P, 1 EPLS-I). It is estimated that by the end of 2004 the Croatian CPR network will have completed total of 24 ERC courses in fully equipped educational centres in six major Croatian cities and will generate 600 ALS/BLS-AED/PLS providers and 200 ERC instructors. The future plan is to extend the 352 Abstracts CPR training to policemen, firemen, flight attendants, security guards and lay people in Croatia.
