Efficient Mechanochemical Synthesis of Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs)
Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are a latest zero- dimensional (0D) member of the carbon family, consist of single to few layers of graphene sheets with lateral dimensions of <100 nm. GQDs have attracted significant attention due to its intriguing physicochemical properties due to the quantum confinement and edge effects, which makes it a good material for potential applications in bioimaging, sensing, solar cells, photovoltaic devices, photocatalysis and white-light-emitting diodes [1]. Various top-down and bottom-up preparation methods of GQDs have been reported until now, even though limited to the small-scale preparation of GQDs and necessity for the use of strong corrosive acids or organic solvents, harsh synthetic processes and long reaction time. However, mechanochemistry is becoming more widespread as a technique because it can promote solid state reactions, even on a large scale, quickly and quantitatively [2]. Herein we describe several different mechanochemical routes for a single and few layer GQDs fabrication.
