Inluence of probioticbacteria on mechanical properties of nickel-titanium alloys used in orthodontics
The aim of this research was to investigate influence of the probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus reuteri on some of mechanical properties such a elastic modulus, yield strength, resilience and flexibility of the nickel – titanium orthodontic archwires. This properties are the main reason for using this alloys in the first stage of the orthodontic treatment. Probiotic supplements are recommended for use during orthodontic treatment because of difficult maintenance of oral hygiene. It is known that some bacteria can cause microbially induced corrosion of the dental alloys but there are not enough information about corrosion potential of probiotic bacteria used for improvement of oral health and their influence on the mechanical properties of the Ni-Ti archwires. Three types of Ni-Ti orthodontic archwires were exposed to the artificial saliva and artificial saliva with probiotic bacteria L. reuteri. Unexposed archwires were used as control. Three- point bending test was used to assess flexibility and resilience in load and unload. Obtained results show that probiotic bacteria L. reuteri do not affect on flexibility and resilience of the examined archwires. By the obtained results we can conclude that L. reuteri can not change working properties of Ni-Ti archwires.
