The Ottoman conquest and Establishment in Croatia and Slavonia
The Ottomans had conquered most of Croatia and half of Slavonia in a piecemeal way from 1470 until 1596. This had occurred mostly as a side – effect of confrontation with Hungary, or, to a lesser extent, with Venice. Beside the top – level planing, the interest of the Bosnian military elite was playing quite an important, sometimes the decisive role. Initially the Ottomans had imposed a regime of marches, which, due to military, social and economic reasons was never completely abolished in most of the region. Till the end of the sixteenth century the achievements in the field of Ottoman – Islamic culture have remained rather modest, yet commercial activities witnessed intense growth.
