Cisr-i kebir-i Ösek, a world wonder
Itis very difficult to connect with certainty the construction of the great Ottoman bridge at Osijek, such as it was described in Ottoman and non-Ottoman narrative sources, as well as on graphic representations – all of them from the 17th century – with the campaign of Süleyman the Magnificent against Szigetvar. All what is undisputable in the 16th century Ottoman sources is the fact that the pontoon bridge had been used, perhaps continuously, since the conquest. In addition to that, in times of the Suleyma-nic Hungarian campaigns, improvised roads of planks were used to enable the troops to march over the marshy land for a mile or two, not more. This in turn entails the assumption that the „World won-der – bridge“ was erected in the period between 1590 and 1610, whereafter it had not the purely military role, but a commercial one as well.
