In August 2014, within the framework of the complete rehabilitation and reconstruction of the church, rescue archaeological excavations and conservation works were continued in the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Hills in Lobor. The aim was to archaeological explore the space along the outer northern part of the baroque enclosure wall in order to initiate the rehabilitation of the foundations and lower part of the wall structure. An area was opened along the north-eastern outer part of the cincture in the length of 20 m and width of about 2 m. During the archaeological explorations a number of grave layers were registered – a total of twenty graves as well as about thirty heaps of bones which indicated a partial or complete devastation of the graves. The Late Antiquity layer of the graves is probably the oldest one established on the basis of small silver S-fibula (of the Várpalota type) that was found. The graves dug at the time of the functioning of the Pre- Romanesque church (10th-12th centuries) can be attributed to the younger layer. Among other, bronze and iron S-loops and cast rings were found in the graves. The graves were damaged considerably both by recent activities as well as in the course of the construction of the cincture, but also during the digging of burial pits for the youngest layer of graves (13th- 15th centuries). A considerable amount of marble stone shards were found around the graves, and among them a few pieces with wickers and hooks, while the most significant find was the small fragment of a Pre-Romanesque church altar partition gable with part of an inscription and an eyed double braid. A large quantity of early medieval vessel shards was also found. In the west part of the probe a well preserved floor of a Late Bronze Age house was discovered. Along the entire length of the probe small shards of prehistoric and Antiquity pottery vessels were found as well as small bronze items and Antiquity coins. During a field survey, in the surface layer of the rain washed earth, a gilded Carolingian tang with ornaments very similar to that on the bone reliquary was found. After completing the excavations, the cut was filled and the archaeological and bone material processed.
