Cetina Valley – An Ancient Pathway of Communication
The Cetina Culture provides firm evidence for Aegean contacts with the area of the eastern Adriatic coast. It is not only the early date of those contacts that is particularly telling but also the fact that, during the Early and Middle Bronze Ages, Aegean overseas contacts were orientated towards the central and eastern Mediterranean, whereas the areas of the western Mediterranean (the Adriatic Sea included) at that time lay outside of the Aegean sphere of interest. The Cetina Culture constitutes a single exception to this scenario. A systematic survey of the Cetina Valley is crucial for revealing the nature of the Cetina-Aegean contacts, which in turn can at least slightly alter our picture of the earliest Aegean interaction with the central Mediterranean.
