Combine effect of UV light and chlorination on Pseudomonas fluorescens biofilm on swimming pool ceramic tiles

Biofilm is a structure microbial community and a quite natural form of growth of most microorganisms. In swimming pool ceramic tiles, Pseudomonas fluorescens has been shown to be among first bacterial colonizers. Pseudomonas spp. are adapted to wide range of conditions and can be found in many different environments such soil, water, plants and food. In man-made water systems, like swimming pools, biofilms become reservoirs of Pseudomonas, and can enhance resistance to several stressed condition like high temperature and chlorination. In our study, dynamic of P. fluorescens biofilm formation on ceramic tiles in tap water was followed for 7 days. Biofilm formation was quantified by viable bacterial counts after ultrasound treatment. Furthermore, the effect of UV light (5 and 20 sec at 254 nm) and chlorination (0, 4 ppm NaOCl) against formed P. fluorescens biofilm, and planktonic cells was tested. Our results showed that P. fluorescens adhere in few hours and after 24 formed stabile biofilm (~106 CFU/cm2). Bacteria in biofilm were more resistant to UV light and chlorination treatment alone or in combination, then the planktonic cells. The double disinfection aims to effectively inhibit or destroy the biofilm and reduce the level of harmful chlorination products.
