The Effectiveness of Malaise Traps, H-Traps and Sticky Traps for Collecting Horseflies (Diptera: Tabanidae)

The efficiency of Malaise traps by Townes' design (1972), H-traps and sticky traps for collecting horseflies was studied. Total of 871 female specimens of horseflies were collected. The most effective traps were sticky traps with 62.22%, followed by the H- traps with 25.95% and the Malaise traps by Townes’ design (1972) with 11.82% collected horseflies. Traps significantly differ in the number of horseflies collected. Sticky traps collected significantly more Tabanus bromius, and T. tergestinus females than H-traps and Malaise traps by Townes’ design (1972), while Malaise traps by Townes’ design (1972) collected significantly more females of Chrysops relictus than other two types of traps. Significant differences in the number of collected specimens of Haematopota pluvialis were not recorded between the sticky traps and H-traps. Other 12 sampled species were not analyzed further, because of low number of collected specimens. Although sticky traps and H – traps have polarizing ability, differences in their efficiency in the number of collected horseflies could be explained by the glue used. Females of horseflies landed on black balls in H-traps, but they did not always fly into the collection cap. Unlike the H-traps, every landing of horseflies on a sticky trap ends with a catch.
