L2 and Hearing Impairment: What do we know so far?

In this paper I will present a review of the literature regarding L2 and hearing impairment. There are severala factors contributing to the oral communication skills of the hearing impaired: the severity and age onset of the impairment, amplification type (cochlear implant or hearing aid), communication mode (spoken or sign language), cognitive factors and SES. The third factor relates to L2 research which can be divided into three subgroups: sign – oral language bilingual acquisition, acquisition of L2 in bilingual environments, usually in minority families, and research on SLL of the hearing impaired. The third subgroup is the least represented and focuses mostly on university level teaching of L2. Although the most important difficulty for hearing impaired L2 learners is speech perception, others are also identified: insufficient L1 knowledge, lack of adequate teaching materials, lack of environmental support (individualized programs or availability of a tutor) to name just a few. To overcome these difficulties in practice various strategies have been employed in teaching – extensive use of visual aids and technology being the most important. The paper ends with examples of good practice and analysis of hearing impaired SLL in Croatia.
