Coupled electromechanical behaviour of kinetic energy harvesters for SHM
Structural health monitoring (SHM) can greatly benefit from the introduction of energy harvesting (EH) technologies as a power source. In fact, SHM systems are generally powered by conventional batteries or via supply cables from detached power sources and are often placed in inaccessible or remote locations, which leads to issues with cable weight or battery replacement and environmental impact. The integration of EH technologies into SHM systems could result in more efficient autonomous sensor nodes, powered by low-level energy from the environment. The most promising approach in this frame is the use of kinetic energy, waste heat or solar energy. The focus of this work is the optimization of piezoelectric kinetic EH devices aimed at increasing their conversion efficiency, specific power outputs and the excitation frequency bandwidth.
