Legacy of eco-museums: anticipating the future
Only recently, partly thanks to development of the critical heritage studies, we understand scope and complexity of the concept of heritage. We recognize that contemporary needs and desires, and the processes of management (through value and significance that we attribute to heritage, or use of heritage for economic and socio-political purposes) are at the very center of the study/ies. Still, it would be wrong to think that these theoretical accomplishments did not have their predecessors. We are pointing here toward experimenting with new forms of museum institutions on the one hand, but also on related theoretical shift addressing relationship between heritage & society that began in the late 1960s in France. More precisely on process of creating and developing eco-museums as a kind of heritage labs, associated with progress of a new museology. In the 1970s we have a turning point in development/understanding of relationships among man and heritage through a new approach of perceiving integrity of an environment in which man/community exists on the one hand, and in the overall interaction of interpretation between this environment and man/community.
