Iconography of the Sacred Stage: Scenography for the Canonical Coronation of Our Lady of Trsat
In 1517, the miraculous image of the Virgin and Child from the Franciscan church in Trsat was crowned with two golden crowns donated by the Vatican Chapter. The guardian of the monastery, Petar Francetić, described the event in his book entitled Tersactum coronata Deipara Virgine, published in Venice in 1718. He gave an account of the lavish scenography of the coronation festivity that included, among other decorations, four temporary triumphal arches erected in Trsat and in the nearby city of Rijeka. The arch erected in front of the trsat church, recorded on the engraving added to Francestić's book, seems to be the most prominent part of the described decorations, having been inspired by examples from Andrea Pozzo's popular book Perspectiva pictorum et architectorum.
