This study aimed to assess gender differences and the role of adult attachment in mate retention (MR) as well as their relationship with one's own mate value. The sample consisted of 471 participants currently in a heterosexual relationship. As expected, results indicated gender differences in mate retention tactics, with an unexpected exception indicating absence of significant usage of appearance enhancement among women. Negative correlation between own mate value and attachment security emerged as well as negative correlation between own mate value and both avoidant and insecure attachment. Own mate value was positively correlated with benefit provisioning (BP) behaviors. Anxious attachment predicts greater exhibition of both BP and cost inflicting (CI) behaviors while avoidant attachment predicts lower exhibition of BP. The effect of the secure versus the insecure attachment emerged on total MR and CI as well as main effect of four attachment styles by Bartholomew on total MR, BP and CI. Preoccupied participants exhibited greater mate retention than participants which were showed to be both secure and dismissing. The main effect of gender was pointing at greater male usage of BP and greater female usage of CI. Further research on the relationship between adult attachment and mate retention on appropriate samples is required.
