The role of teachers in teaching English for academic purposes – past and present

This paper explores one type of English language teaching at university-level institutions i.e. teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP). More specifically the paper focuses on the roles EAP teachers assume while teaching EAP, i.e. teacher, course designer and materials provider, collaborator, researcher and evaluator. We argue that although EAP teachers today perform the same roles as they did in the past, the teaching context and the tools used in the teaching process have changed, especially in the context of the internalization of higher education and the use of multimedia technologies in the classroom. Therefore, EAP teachers are expected to constantly accommodate the needs of students, i.e. the digital natives, to keep up with the modern approaches to teaching EAP and to take advantage of the virtual classroom.
