Modifications of isotactic polypropylene with fillers and thermoplastic elastomers
In order to improve the mechanical properties of PP and other polymers, it is common practice to incorporate fillers and/or elastomers. Fillers usually improve the stiffness, strength, hardness and abrasion resistance of PP, but they also reduce its impact strength. Elastomers act as impact modifiers for PP and reduce its stiffness. The combination of fillers and elastomers in the PP matrix is the subject of many investigations (5-9) in the development of new polymeric materials. With the corresponding combination of both, the properties of the planned materials can be tailored for a particular application. The results of the investigations are important for the development of new polymeric materials, as well as for solving the problems of material recycling of polymeric wastes. In the overview of our basic and applied research, dealing with the effects of fillers and thermoplastic elastomers onto structure, properties and structure/property relationships of the corresponding isotactic polypropylene (iPP) systems will be presented.
