Stjepan Srkulj's Tourist Guidebooks and the Formation of Cultural Identity
Although he held the mayor’s office under very turbulent historical circumstances little historical and no linguistic research has been done on a historian, politician and Zagreb mayor Stjepan Srkulj (1869 – 1951), who authored many history books for secondary education as well as the first Croatian history atlas. The tourist guidebooks he wrote in Croatian language can indicate his efforts in forming cultural and linguistic identity in the first half of the 20th century. After providing an overview of the travel guidebook text type research, this paper aims to describe the ways in which Stjepan Srkulj forms the Croatian cultural and linguistic identity in his Zagreb travel guidebook in Croatian when expressing his attitudes about historical and political events and individuals. Since the first edition of his travel guidebook in Croatian was published in 1928, only four years after Tomo Maretić’s Language Adviser (1924), finding out to what extent the language Srkulj uses deviates from the linguistic norm of the time, i. e. to what extent he affirms and promotes his political views by the lexis he uses in the historical, political and linguistic context of the interwar Zagreb will surely be a contribution to Croatistics.
