Sažetak
This research used the statistical learning paradigm to examine the neuropsychological correlates of processing events with different phonotactic probabilities in adults with dyslexia comparing to non-dyslexic individuals. The experimental procedure consisted of two parts. First, in the familiarization phase participants were presented with two groups of disyllabic pseudowords. One group were pseudowords with high and the second group were pseudowords with low phonotactic probability. The first syllables in each group of pseudowords were equiprobable, while the second syllables occurred with either low (20%) or high (80%) frequency. During the familiarization phase we recorded the event-related (ERP) brain activity. The second part was a behavioral task which assessed the ability to differentiate stimuli based on the frequency of occurrence within the exposition phase. Group differences were found on the neuropsychological but not on the behavioral level. The observed effect indicated electrophysiological processing deficits on the level of learning distributional frequencies of high and low phonotactic probability in participants with dyslexia. On the other hand, statistical analysis of the behavioral effects of learning did not reveal group differences and reflected learning by both groups. Our findings suggest intact statistical learning in participants with dyslexia, and show that deficits in dyslexia are present at the neuropsychological level of learning and processing distributional frequencies of phoneme combinations in language input.
