Stress and fatigue analysis of BV-65 manual tongs latch

The behaviour of latch segment of manual tongs used in oil industry subjected to nominal loads is investigated. By the use of finite element analysis stress and fatigue calculations are conducted to check the acceptabilty of low alloy steel for use in areas of high stresses and torques. Linear elastic fracture mechanics is used to calculate the stress intensity factor and fatigue crack growth resulting with great number of cycles needed for crack initiation and a very short time to reach critical crack length.
