Transformation and continuity of Christianity in Croatian Children´s Literature

The paper focusses on the Christian continuity in the Croatian children’s literature from the very beginnings to the contemporary period ; on the modes of transmission and transgression of Christian values within Croatian children's literature. Croatian culture and literature are entirely market by Christianity. Christianity is an inseparable part of the Croatian children`s literature. Nominally, we marked four levels of development of the Christian thought: traditional approach (moralising- didactic literature), Ivana Brlić Mažuranić and Jagoda Truhelka as a separate category, the period of the Socialist Yugoslavia regime which made considerable efforts to suppress Christianity from the public and cultural life, where Croatian literature was either marginalised or neglected, and contemporary approach to Cristianity. The contemporary aspect is based on the endeavour of the authors Sonja Tomić and Stjepan Lice. Sonja Tomić and Stjepan Lice write their stories in form of parables, typical of Gospels, stories where in a vivid and understandable way Jesus speaks about ordinary things that occur regularly in nature and human life. They have a timeless meaning and show how everyday life is connected with spiritual reality and the Kingdom of God. The stories written by Sonja Tomić and Stjepan Lice encourage children to think about fundamental human values. The power of parables is in the reaction of the listener, therefore in the texts written by the authors discussed here, a reaction is expected from the child - the recipient. The goal of educating children is to make them grow into mature, stable and responsible persons, so choosing the stories by Stjepan Lice and Sonja Tomić in working with children is completely justified, because it is primarily located in the context of Croatian children’s literature, especially religious literature, and is not a mere moving their poetics out in children’s media.
