A Couple from Iapodian Territory. Some Considerations on the Indigenous Clothing during the Roman Era

A fragment of a stone monument depicting a married couple is deposited in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb. It originates from Čakovac near Josipdol (Croatia), a site located in the central area of the Illyrian ethnic group Iapodes. With the Roman expansion, Iapodes were subjected to gradual romanization, but it seems that Iapodian traditional material and spiritual culture have survived during the Roman era. This can be recognized on stone fragment where both figures are depicted en face and in a full-length, a female figure at the left and a male figure at the right. A man is holding a scroll with his left hand, and both figures are joining their right hands (dextrarum iunctio). This motif is most often depicted on coins and various sarcophagi reliefs. Based on its shape and dimensions, it is assumed that this fragment was also part of such sarcophagus. It dates back to the 3rd or early 4th cent. AD. The garment, shoes, and jewelry of portrayed persons, especially females, will be in the focus of our interest. They have elements of traditional Iapodian clothing and suggest that this couple belonged to a more prosperous stratum of the domestic, romanized population.
