Teaching Oral Presentation Skills in the Age of PowerPoint
In this work I intend to discuss the shortcomings of the cognitive stile of PowerPoint in the context of the use of PowerPoint as the visual support for oral presentations in EAP, the central question being does relying on PowerPoint hinder the development of the student’s oral presentation skills. When teaching students how to organize speech on expert topics it is of major importance to make them understand that their first task is to make the transfer of information easy for the audience. The art of oral presentation consist in organizing your material into coherent and cohesive speech, which involves a number of strategies, and understanding speech presumes recognizing its main ideas and their relationships. Using a written piece of text as a form of visual support to speech is a useful way to help to the listener grasp the essential ideas and deal with the rapid influx of information. This work will try to show the superiority of a simple printed page of text with a series of guidelines representing the main ideas of the speech and the major support to them over the sequence of slides with list of bulleted points.
