OPPOSITES ATTRACT: TEACHING ABOUT SUMMARY WRITING AND ESSAY WRITING IN EAP
Essay can be defined as an elaborate answer to an implied question, while summary is just the opposite, a condensed form of an originally elaborately developed idea. Teaching essay writing means to teach how not to leave a single important detail out, that is, how to fit the diverse elements of meaning together in a logical sequence until the idea of the text is rounded of, while summarizing means leaving out everything but the very essential, yet still maintaining the original meaning of the summarized text. The purpose of this work is to show how learning about summary writing reinforces comprehension of the organization of information in essay writing and how features of well written prose, like, for example, coherence or cohesion can be discussed in the context of both types of text.
