Determination of the radon 222Rn activity concentration in bottled mineral water using Liquid Scintillation Detector
Usually, commercially available bottled mineral water is filled from groundwater sources such as springs, wells and boreholes. These sources of water normally have higher concentrations of radon than surface water from reservoirs, rivers or lakes. In this paper physical and chemical properties of radon and its short-lived progeny are described, as well as the mechanism of radon transfer through the soil in water and air. Some conclusions on the influence of radon and radon progeny on public health are presented. The main goal of this work is to determine the radon activity concentrations in several bottled mineral waters that are commercially available in stores in Croatia. Radon activity concentrations are determined using the liquid scintillation detector TriCarb 2900 (Perking Elmer) and the appropriate dose due to ingestion of that water are calculated. Conclusions about the used method and obtained results are given.
