SIMULATION AND IMPROVEMENT ON VENTILATION SYSTEM OF SVETA BARBARA MINE IN SAMOBOR

Mine ventilation is one of the most important tasks that exist in the development of a mining operation. It is the blood that runs through the galleries carrying oxygen to the workers and machines, diluting pollutants and extracting them through the return airways ; In short, it is who makes possible the work “under the earth”. For that reason I did not want to conclude my stage as a student in Mining Engineering without having deepened more in such an important point in the design of a mine, as is its ventilation system, so throughout the present project I have tried to do a review by the theoretical and mathematical principles on which this discipline is based and the IT tools that greatly facilitate the work of designing a ventilation network. As it is not only a matter of deepening in a theoretical way, but such knowledge must always be put into practice. To this end, the simulation of the ventilation network of an old mine, now converted into a museum, has been carried out. Thanks to the simulation and the calculations made, it has been possible to determine the faults or deficiencies of the air flows existing in the mine, and thus try to realize what is the main objective of the engineering: to improve. Then, two improvement proposals have been made, one of them involves the expansion of this museum mine from a route of 350 m to reach more than 700 m. The second proposal is made with the intention of increasing the airflows of the current mine by reducing the existing air losses and thus making the current ventilation system more effective. The entire document has been written in English and applying the Croatian laws available or, failing that, the European laws. This has been an additional challenge in the development of the project, although the intention to deepen the ventilation systems in the mine has been widely achieved.
