Classification of Phraseological Units in the Songs of Pop Group Magazin

This thesis focuses on identification and structural classification of 89 phraseological units found in lyrics of studio albums released by a Croatian pop group Magazin. Each song’s lyrics from each studio album was analysed and each potential phraseological unit was confirmed in one of the available lexicographic sources. The most linguistically demanding and branched field among these three is the classification according to the structure of phraseological units. The main objective of this paper was to further approximate the terminology connected with the structure of phraseological units and to classify them according to their structure. PUs, according to Menac, can be divided into phonetic words, word-group phraseological units and sentences. However, none PUs of phonetic word structure can be found in this particular corpus, thus PUs were primarily classified into word-like (78) and sentence-like PUs. All sentence-like PUs are actually simple sentences (11). Furthermore, following the sub-category of the classification, word-like PUs are divided between syntactically dependent (71) and independent, (7), with noting the type of connection between the constituents of syntactically dependent PU, which is the third sub-division. Connection types that can occur between the constituents of syntactically dependent phraseological units are rection (56), syntactic mapping (9) and word congruence (6). According to this data, the most common structure of phraseological units used in songs of pop group Magazin is word-like PU with syntactically dependent relation with constituents connected by rection.
