Mind Mapping the Way to Effective Writing and Presentation Skills in ESP

Ever since mind maps were made popular by Tony Buzan in the 1960s, they have been used in various aspects of education, including foreign language teaching. The most common uses of mind maps in education are in brainstorming ideas, i.e. activating prior knowledge, organizing ideas, note taking and problem solving. Not only does mind mapping help learners collect, organize and summarize the information, it also serves as a memory aid and creativity booster. English language teachers have also acknowledged the advantages of using this technique inside and outside the classroom, especially when brainstorming and teaching new vocabulary. The aim of this paper is to show how mind mapping can be used in the context of higher education and for study success. More specifically, it will explore the use of mind maps in teaching ESP writing and presentation skills. As most students are visual learners mind maps can help them visualize ideas, establish connections between them more easily, and eventually use that visual representation of ideas to engage with writing assignments and to deliver oral presentations effectively. In addition to being visual learners, students are also digital natives, and thus ESP practitioners should encourage them to exploit new technologies when designing and presenting mind maps, i.e. consider online mind mapping software.
