Early modern cemeteries Lobor, Ilok and Rijeka; similarities and differences in funeral customs

Early modern funeral customs are clearly different from the late-medieval ones. Changes occur after the Council of Trent and are mostly manifested in the intense popular piety that can be followed in the grave finds. This lecture will try to establish how geographical, political and social differences affect the popular piety and funeral customs of the Early Modern Period. In the area around the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Uznesenje Blažene Djevice Marije) in Rijeka there was a city cemetery in the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. During the archaeological research, the remains of 1, 335 deceased were found. The largest number, 725 of them, was buried inside a large ossuary. By the decision of the emperor Joseph II in 1773, burials within the city walls were prohibited and the cemetery in Rijeka was no longer in function. More than 1000 graves at the cemetery around the Church of Our Lady of the Mountain (Majka Božja Gorska) in Lobor were researched, most of which belong to the Early Modern Period. After the construction of the porch in 1780, the locals were buried in a crypt under the southern porch, while in the church and around it in the 19th century only the priests and nobles were buried. In Ilok, along the eastern line of the fortress wall, 94 graves were investigated, which are part of the city’s early modern cemetery. Each of these three cemeteries has its specific qualities dictated by socio-economic and religious cultural conditions. The mentioned cemeteries will be compared with several published early modern graves in Dalmatia.
