Cinema as the political alternative - the case of Plastic Jesus (1971/1990), Lazar Stojanović and Tomislav Gotovac

Political activism and subversive artistry of Lazar Stojanović (in his influential film Plastic Jesus), explained with particular concern of Tomislav Gotovac's individual contribution, fits in many aspects the description of alternative culture. However, the position of the Belgrade film school where Plastic Jesus was produced, the Black Wave cinema in general and its criticism, gives insight into ambivalent nature of even the most subversive artwork of the era, informed on the crossroads of cine-club experimentalism and mainstream modernist provocation.
