Rheumatoid arthritis: the importance of antibodies in diagnostic and treatment
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with a prevalence of 0.5% to 1% in the general population is the most common systemic autoimmune disease associated with chronic inflammation and joint destruction. Sometimes, in the beginning of the disease it is diffucult to differentiate RA from other forms of arthritis, so, that, in fact an early diagnosis can be quite difficult. Autoantibodies that are found in RA may be present and detected years before the development of clinical symptoms. Early diagnosis is very important because a large proportion of patients develop joint damage very quickly following the onset of illness. RA must be differentiated from self- limiting form of arthritis, not only due to the different prognosis, but also due to the risk that is associated with the treatment of RA. Modern therapeutic approach to RA presupposes the application of aggressive anti-rheumatic therapy in the first months of the disease. Because of the toxic drugs that can cause very dangerous side effects it is necessary, by utilizing highly specific marker to identify patients with RA before the advent of the joint damage. It would be beneficial in these patients to utilize these therapies to overcome potential risks (1).
