Sexual Liberation in Socialist Yugoslavia’s Print Magazines: The Case of Extra Reporter (1981-1983)

Contrary to the countries of Eastern Bloc, Yugoslavia encouraged liberal views on sexuality and gender equality. One of the main tools were diverse media outlets, such as “magazines for grown-ups” or lifestyle papers which reported openly on matters of sex. The magazine Čik was first published in 1968. The magazines that followed, like Eva i Adam, dug deeper, as were magazines like Dvoje and the socialist version of Playboy, called Start. Male nudity was never presented in an eroticized way, but always as a prop to a love- making female. The successors of Čik, published in the same printing house NIŠPRO Jež, were various versions of the popular magazines Reporter, Zum Reporter and Extra Reporter. While other magazines never felt brave enough to go openly with naked male pin-up spreads, the short-lived Extra Reporter included lots of male nudity with the editorial touch of putting it in the most unexpected places. They occupied lots of printing space, including posters and spreads and were mainly pulled from international gay erotica magazines. The deeply subversive structure of magazine editing in Extra Reporter, by Ljubiša Kozomara and associates, where the homosexual imagery of naked men was used to free up and liberate heterosexual couples, went unnoticed.
