Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski’s Reading of Byron. Gusar (1844) and Collective Memory
In the history of Croatian literature it is a well-known fact that Sakcin- ski’s 1844 play is an adaptation of Byron’s The Corsair (1814), a work that enjoyed great popularity during the Romantic period and counted among his six Turkish tales. Every adaptation is an interpretation to some extent, since the work is transferred from one cultural context to another (in this case from the western-European to Slavic context) and from one literary system to another (western Romanticism to national). In this article, we show how Byron and Romantic concepts are transferred to the Slavic context, to an entirely different socio-political framework, with the effect of supporting the burgeoning collective memory in the Croatian national revival.
