The Medvescak Public Library Web Space

The Medvescak Public Library Web space is constructed on the foundation of the old site &#8211 ; simple, basic HTML product that successfully (in the first period of time &#8211 ; 1998 / 2001) filled the role of the fast, remote access to the library (OPAC, e-mail requests and questions, library history, working hours and on site services) &#8211 ; http://www.knjizmed.hr . As one of the first libraries in Croatia to give Internet access to its catalogue, we possess the experience in providing basic digital library services and a significant sample of the site statistics. Todays requirements towards an average public library Web site have changed in terms of the number of particular services and of the technology and content behind the interface (active service pages, middleware, search engines, metadata). The MPL Web pages are built respecting those requirements. The children's section of the MPL site, as well as the young adults', in particular offers a new approach. Their role is twofold. The first part communicates and interacts with children or young adults offering them possibilities of self-expression and serving as the media and technology education space. This presents a breakthrough within the practice of Croatian children libraries' sites mainly designed for adults. The second part is oriented towards children's librarians and aims to provide information and guidelines, based on the years of experience in the children's librarianship and in serving as a model toy library for Croatia. Our contribution at LIDA 2003 conference should demonstrate the pressing demand to keep up with the development of the Web technologies as well as the librarianship standards and guidelines, but most of all the needs of our current and potential patrons: children, parents, young adults and adults.
