Facts and Possibilities of Slant in Anglo-American Tradition
The influence of language in forming and maintaining social structures and roles has been speculated by writers of fiction. George Orwell, in his book Nineteen Eighty-Four, postulated a society in which the ruling powers tried to maintain almost total control over the population. A weapon was the language. Word 'slant' is commonly used, every day.One can slant things to the left or right. One can walk up a steep slant. But in the world of writing it means that one can write an article or a book to a specific audience or when journalists tell only part of a story, including cherry-picking information / data to support one side, ignoring another. Slant determining means understanding the readers of the particular publication or publishing house.Slant prevents readers from getting the full story and narrows the scope of understanding. Journalism has a set of ethical standards and values, including truth and accuracy, fairness and impartiality. However, it is frightening what media has become with influence makers on the scene, today. We'll compare case studies of slant in Anglo-American tradition with Croatian mass media cases.
